NCN - History

NCN: A History of Product Leadership

The National Check Network was started in November 1991 as Rocky Mountain Retail Systems (RMRS), by Robert L. Anderson, Jr. and Donald E. Dick. The company developed an advanced check verification database that could be utilized by collection agencies and their merchants, or used directly by merchants.

The database uses both negative information, which is based on returned checks, and positive historical data, which records recent check transactions for each account in the database. It has pioneered the use of many sophisticated features to augment negative data and prevent merchants from being victimized by fraudulent checks.

Early on, the company identified the need for a national database running on a system capable of handling a much higher transaction volume, and established the National Check Information Service (NCIS) in September 1995. This service offered many powerful features at an extremely low cost.

In August 1997, the company completed the development of ISDN, Frame Relay and Internet links to remote databases from its check database. This concept was developed to enhance check guarantee services and provide point of sale access to multiple databases. When used, transactions approved by the database can access a remote check verification system to obtain additional review prior to returning the response to the point of sale.

The name of the subsidiary was changed to NCN after the acquisition of the National Check Network by ECHO in 2001, and it grew substantially as the two databases were combined.
